Porto offers countless interesting neighborhoods. To make sure you don’t miss anything during your visit to the Invicta city, here is a list of the city’s most iconic areas, with all their neighborhoods and landmarks.

LA RIBEIRA

Let’s start with our neighborhood, the most photogenic area of ​​the city, characterized by the colorful facades overlooking the Duero, the rabelos boats and the famous bridge D. Luis I. In this historic area, declared a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, you can walk along the river while enjoying regular street performances. You can also admire the Church of San Francisco or climb the Elevador da Lada, a free glass elevator that will allow you to gaze at a different view.

VILA NOVA DE GAIA

On the opposite bank of the Ribeira is Vila Nova de Gaia. This is the shore of the famous wineries, many of which, in addition to tasting the different varieties of Port wine, offer exhibitions and even fado shows in a unique environment.

In Vila Nova de Gaia you can also admire the Ribeira, not only from the shore, but also from above, thanks to the Gaia Cable Car.

BAIXA

The Baixa is up the hill from the Ribeira. This large area, which spans over several neighborhoods of the city, includes many must-visit attractions, for example the central Avenida dos Aliados with the famous Praça da Liberdade. The train station of São Bento, with its famous tile (azulejo) murals. The Cordoaría area, where you can visit the Torre dos Clérigos and the Lello & Irmão bookstore. The Sé do Porto, the oldest neighborhood in the city, with the Cathedral as the main highlight. The Bolhão area and the Rúa Santa Catarina, traditionally a market area and commercial street. And last but not least, the lively Cedofeita neighborhood, where, among other things, the Rua Miguel Bombarda is renowned for its many art galleries.

BOAVISTA

Slightly further away, Boavista is worth a visit for the famous Casa da Música. This icon of modern architecture, designed by Rem Koohlaas, is a city landmark not only for the interest of its building, but also for its comprehensive concert programming.

In Boavista, you can also visit the Casa das Artes, the botanical garden of Porto or the spacious Parque da Cidade, which also hosts markets and other events.

FOZ DO DOURO

A visit to Porto would not be complete without exploring the mouth of the Duero. Foz do Douro offers wonderful beaches and is the perfect area to walk along the sea and gardens or enjoy a swim.

But Foz do Douro does not only offer coastal landscapes. You will also find the Serralves Museum Foundation, with an outstanding programming of modern art exhibitions. Its spacious gardens are also worth a visit and host many activities throughout the year.
